1.Welcome
This is my “This I Believe”
video. This video was made so that I can
tell the viewer about what I believe about education and why it is personal for
me. You will hear about my learning experiences
with my teacher Mr. Werner and why it affects me today. I hope you enjoy this beautiful
video made with the intention to entertain.
2.My Classroom
My classroom was created with the
hope of promoting a learning centered, communication based classroom with
authentic assessment. I made my classroom very basic, because I believe that in
a high school setting, the traditional classroom works best. The students are
put into rows facing the smart board, my desk and the maps which will be used
in almost every lesson. My classroom will promote centered learning because I
will be putting emphasis on student developing lifelong skills. For instance,
when we talk in the beginning of class, I hope that it will help student build
communication skills and also learn to disagree with one another in a mature,
productive way. I think that that is a demonstration of being an adult and is
just as important as knowing dates, names, etc. As I have said many times, my
class is communication based and I think the setup of the classroom helps this.
Although the book says a classroom setup in a circle is best for communication,
with me in the front of the class, I can “pick on” those on talking and draw
them out of their shells. Finally, my classroom will give the student authentic
assessment in that they will graded on not just their tests and projects, but
also their class participation.
Within
my classroom, we will have many daily rituals and routines. The first routine
is before the lesson even starts is to talk. This talking will include what the
class thought about the homework or the reading and if anything stood out. In
addition, since I will hopefully be teaching a history class, we will also
discuss current world events and how the class believes they will impact the future. This talking before the lesson will make the
classroom communication based in that I hope it will help students come out of their
shells and be comfortable enough to speak in front of myself and their peers. I
also would consider occasionally having typed current event papers so that everyone
has to do research and to further make my classroom communication based. Another daily routine would be to post my
lectures and class materials online each and every day on a website similar to D2L
(which I wouldn’t be surprised if using websites like D2L becomes standard in high
school classrooms). Making sure that my lectures and other class materials are available
to both students and parents will promote accessibility within the classroom.
If one of my students is sick they can easily see what they missed, and if a
parent has a question about the lesson, they may have quickly find their answers
without even having to ask me.

Instructional Glimpse

Let’s
pretend that you are a student in my Contemporary History class and today we
are to learn about the presidency of John F. Kennedy and how it affected the Cold
War. My goals and standards would be for you to know the years that Kennedy was
president, who he ran against, his vice-president, the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban
Missile Crisis and to know the name of the Soviet Premier at the time. Although
I will tell you about many other facts and opinions, this will be the important
information that will show up on tests.
The Summative Assessment Plan will be to give you test in the very near
future on the major events and Presidencies of Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and
Johnson.
The
class will start with us discussing what you thought was interesting of the
chapter you read on Kennedy. Next, we will briefly talk about a current event and
what our opinions of it are. I plan on playing Devil’s Advocate in order to
turn the class against one another and truly think about the current event. These discussions will only last about ten
minutes and it is now time for the lecture to start. I will have a PowerPoint
projected, but it will have the minimal information, in order to learn you must
listen intently. I will go over the information stated in the goals and
standards, but also talk about over interesting facts such as the role T.V
played in the Kennedy-Nixon debates, and how it helped Kennedy win (Kennedy-Nixon). With about 5 minutes left in class I will
answer any question that remain and tell the class what they will be tested on.
Throughout the lesson I plan on being as humorous and interesting as possible
and as I said in the “I Believe” video, I will be passionate.

My Technology Integration

One
tool that I think would be awesome to use is Facebook . I plan on making a
profession Facebook that I use solely for my classes. I would encourage all of
my students and their parents to also make a Facebook if they don’t already
have one and friend request me. If they are uncomfortable will being my friend
then I will tell them to make a second Facebook just for my class. Using this
Facebook page, I could have “office hours” in which students and parents can
chat me any questions they have during a certain time and get instant answers.
Another use would be to post examples of past projects that students can use
for reference while doing their current projects. With this Facebook page I can post links to
any website, tool, or blog that I think can help my students. In addition students can also use this Facebook
page to discuss outside of class, I could make it a grade that everyone comments
on one of my posts. This Facebook page would become the Town hall of the
classroom.

I think
that using Facebook in the classroom will help me grow my Personal Learning
Networks, but I also plan on using tools such as Twitter and Blogger to expand
my learning networks. Tools like Twitter and Blogger will allow me to stay up
to date on the latest in teaching and also connect with other teachers whom can
help me better myself. We saw in class how many teachers have blogs and how useful
and interesting their teaching styles were. In our
book, we are given 7 examples of the effects of Personal Learning Networks,
these are students are better prepared for life and work in the 21st
century, classrooms are more engaging, students are responsible for their own learning,
instruction is more individualized, adults become better at their jobs and build
problem-solving capacity, students are safer, and school save time and money. I believe that I personal can apply these
effects to my own classroom.
